3rdeye

3rdeye.150x150(AUS)

-Emerging from a background in audio engineering and metal production, 3rdeye began experimenting with drum and bass production in 2005 as well as establishing himself as a DJ supporting artists as diverse as Concord Dawn, Artificial Intelligence, High Contrast, Mindscape, Black Sun Empire, Big Bud and Calyx. Now considered one of the leading lights of the Australian dubstep scene, 3rdeye has been grounded in the movement since debut track ‘Irish Wind’ garnered widespread acclaim in 2007. He is submerged in the deeper side of the genre with a soulful, diverse, and everexpanding sound. 3rdeye’s detailed productions point to a wide range of influences – the lush chords and crackles of dubtechno, the atmosphere and melody of deep drum and bass, to the stark minimalism and enveloping sub-bass of early dubstep. He also draws influence from personal experiences, art, philosophy, dreams, and film in order to create his cinematic, emotionally charged soundscapes. 3rdeye’s style is never static, and this is reflected in a healthy release schedule on a variety of internationally renowned labels including Requiem Audio, Stoke Audio, Twenty/Twelve Recordings, Sub Continental Dub, Gamma Audio, Case Records and Echodub.

Since late 2008 Droid Sector had steadily been increasing his exposure within the scene through a number digital releases on labels such as Rottun, Shift and Stupid Fly. Dubtek

(US)

The pacific northwest is home to musical legends, progressive happenings, masterpieces and among them hails the techy, deep and audacious music emanating from the young soul that is Dubtek.  A sort of  classic sinful hopping funk, graces his tracks, as he gains fuel from jazz, grunge, metal, hip hop and North Indian Classical.
Dubtek’s early work of faster breakcore and experimental on the IDM level, settled into Dubstep by way of Drum & Bass.
Producing for half a decade now, Dubtek’s debut 2008 singles released on Shift (Recordings), were inevitably followed by the dark roar of 2009’s, Apparition EP also on Shift.  That of which catapulted him into the category of reputable producers.  It received play from top names worldwide and was a top seller proven by sales on multiple record outlets.
His Debut 12″ out on Terminal Dusk brought forth much praise and marked 2010 as a year of break through for the young technician. It was followed by another 12″, that was a remix for Shift later that year, along with several releases on Paradise Lost, Stoke Audio and Alterkation.  His bass creations waiting to shine are multiple 12’s for Paradise Lost, Terminal Dusk, Trust in Music, Vicious Audio and Requiem and digital releases for Gradient, Sub Pressure and Hypnosis.
Also brewing, are remixes and collaborations with Droid Sector, Niveau Zero, Matta, B1t Crunch3r and an army of inspiring acts, that are guaranteed to melt your faces and rattle your chests.
Dubtek is never slowing down with his relentless efforts in the studio, nonetheless please do come prepared for a crate of fresh original compositions.   With this he has warmed up for dubstep’s biggest names like Caspa, N Type, Boxcutter, Babylon System, 16bit and 12th Planet.  Receiving support from some of the industries leading talent and record labels, it’s affirmative that he delivers a slew of the most upfront dubstep that is to come.

Grym

(US)

-Grym’s passion for drum & bass began in 1996 when he discovered the sound at an underground party in Washington DC. A love for hip hop coupled with an affection for electronic music naturally resulted in a strong interest in drum & bass and dubstep. By 2000, he was cutting his teeth as a DJ in the Seattle circuit. Two years later, Grym, along with other like minded friends, concocted a drum & bass weekly which would become a staple in the Seattle scene- ONSET. Since then, the night has grown into an internationally acclaimed event running eight years strong and has spawned a successful digital label, Onset Audio.

Known for his dark, techy, and hip hop influenced sets, Grym has spun alongside almost every major player in the drum & bass game. More recently, Grym has turned his attentions towards pushing the dubstep sound, producing tracks with Shift Recordings collaborators TZR, Surpass, and Dubtek. With the label in full swing, an arsenal of unreleased tunes in his hands, consistent local bookings and gigs from New York to LA, Hawaii to Alaska, Grym has cemented his place as an important player in Seattle’s underground music scene.

HxdB

(CAN)

HxdB aka hexadecibel is a 33 year old bass music producer and DJ hailing from Vancouver, Canada. He was first introduced to bass-centric music in the mid 90s, listening to jungle and drum & bass, which captivated his imagination and inspired him to be more than just a fan of the music. He finally took the plunge into the production realm some years ago, purchasing a basic MIDI controller and a copy of Fruity Loops and alongside his old production partner, started teaching himself the ways of the bass. Those days were fun and innocent and not much came from the venture, besides a solid foundation of music and a working knowledge of the nuts-and bolts of how to make electronic music.

7 years later and many life experiences later, he had a musical epiphany after a life-changing music festival. It completely changed the way he heard music, and gave him that same euphoric feeling he had all those years ago. This was just the thing he needed to launch himself back in to the foray and unleash his creative energies. His first productions exceeded even his own expectations and were happily welcomed by the bass music community, which gave him the encouragement and inspiration to forge forward and strive to improve. Now, 2 years later, he has an impressive arsenal of fresh music to his credit, has contributed music to several film projects, scored a documentary and has releases out and forthcoming on several notable record labels, plus a legion of faithful fans who just can’t seem to get enough of his sound.

His music is soulful and evocative, always sounding very lush and well-sculpted, accented by pulsating bass waves with a healthy sprinkling of ear candy. Using his unique soundscape as the framework, he skillfully fuses elements of techno, garage, 2-step & jungle with interesting, syncopated rhythms and creative arrangements. His sound typically has a dance floor sensibility that often times, his peers seem to forget about. 2010 has seen this man prove his mettle by remixing and collaborating with an exhaustive list of producers: Distal, Phaeleh, FBOM, Kwality, Cairo, Ill-Ehsa, Vincent Parker, Grooki, Tri-Funk, VVV, Section8, Perfect Cell, Style Disciples, Blind Prophet, Sephirot, Autopilot, Numbernin6, Don Goliath, B1t Crunch3r, Killeralien, Alien Pimp, Atma, KZSS & Foiled Torsos. With the success of these, along with his incredibly popular remake or Robert Miles’ timeless “Children”, his remixing skills are in huge international demand.

The future for this bass architect seems to be very bright and busy, with several feature Podcasts under his belt for J’aime Le Dubstep, Electronic Explorations, Sonic Router, Sicknote & Kryptic Elements, not to mention his own monthly podcast “Hexadecibel Loves”, plus an increasingly in-demand DJ schedule. He, together with Aufect Recordings’, DJ Cure, run Pressing Issues Recordings, which is currently working on it’s 3rd vinyl release. In addition he co-operates Gradient Audio along side label head, B1t Crunch3r. This is one person who has his finger placed firmly on the ever-beating pulse of bass music and certainly one to keep your eyes open for.

The future of dubstep is happening in Los Angeles, CA, where forward looking producers and club nights are taking yesterday’s sounds, smashing them to rubble, and from the broken pieces are creating some of the most cutting edge bass music the world over. Whereas fans worldwide have their ears trained on LA County to see what’s going to happen next, bass fans in the know in LA have their ears trained firmly on Kelly Dean.

As the SMOG crew’s new resident badboy, Kelly Dean is taking the west coast underground by storm via a slew of hot releases on Shift Recordings, Rubik, Peer Pressure, Carbon Logic, and SMOG’s own digital imprint. With a background in drum & bass, having garnered critical acclaim teaming up with DnB producer Calculon, Dean’s sunk his teeth firmly into dubstep where artists like Excision and Datsik have taken notice of the up and comer, both handling remix duties on Dean’s collaboration with Steady, ‘Teflon’.

Recently, Scion A/V has taken notice as well, featuring both Dean’s original mix of ‘Teflon’ and the aforementioned remix on the upcoming SMOG Scion CD Sampler V.30. With such large-scale distribution and his tunes getting play from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC Radio 1, Crissy Criss on 1xtra, Plastician, Fused Forces, 12th Planet, Pawn, and EMU, Dean’s time as LA’s dirty little secret is about to be over.

Logam

(US)

-Before Drum N Bass, Death Metal and Black Metal were Logam’s obsessions. At the age of 12 he received his first guitar and from that day on nothing except music really mattered to him…at all. Shortly afterwards he discovered the fun in playing multiple instruments. Bass, Piano, and Drums were then added to the roster of musical abilities. Riff structure, speed, accuracy, timing, groove, difficulty, and catchiness were all the elements that lead to his worshipping and idolizing of Metal musicians.
In 1994, at the age of 15, he started a Metal Band called Unblessed in Atlanta GA. For the next 8 years, Unblessed continued to become one of the best Death Metal bands in Atlanta, playing shows with the likes of Dying Fetus, Immolation, Nile, Monstrosity, Cryptopsy, Divine Empire, Gorguts, Vader, All out War, and more. Unfortunately, due to schooling and the irregular flow of life, the band split up in 2003. Logam refused to give up his obsession with music just because his band had dissolved. While attending Culinary school in Rhode Island, most of his free time was spent exploring the world of producing, engineering, and sequencing. Starting with Vegas Video 4, Logam recorded/wrote his own material and planned on reemerging in the metal scene shortly after school.
However, he eventually became bored with Metal and started looking for other styles of music. He had a slight interest in Electronic music and started making songs in Reason 2.5, making remixes of old Mega Man songs and Night Rider. In 2006, Logam was introduced to Drum N Bass by a few of his friends. After hearing the “Pack of Wolves” remix by Pendulum, he knew he had found his new home. Within months of hearing DNB, he bought his first set of turntables. He now produces Drum N Bass, Dubstep, Hip Hop, and Experimental tunes and has just started his own label called SANTOKU RECORDS. His first show was on Feb 25, 2008 opening for Mayhem. He is currently a Producer/DJ on SANTOKU RECORDS, Black Reign LTD, Ocean Breeze Digital, Corinthian Recordings, Nerve Agent Recordings, Public Records, Gradient Audio, and is affiliated with 404audio. ..

Savaran

(UK)

-Savaran is Mark Walters from Wales in the UK. After developing an early interest in electronic music in the mid 1980’s he moved away from the music scene to develop a career as an Archaeologist. In 2008 he returned to music and started recording new material in the ambient, experimental and soundscaping genres. He lives on the Welsh border near Shrewsbury. His music is a mix of ambient, electro-acoustic, experimental, soundscaping and electronic styles. The tracks are created on a variety of software and hardware synthesisers and also utilise field recorded material which has been subtly interwoven into many of the sounds.
His ambient tracks have a rich, deep and haunting quality which paint pictures in sound of mysterious landscapes and unexplored horizons. In contrast with these more placid works there are occasionally more rhythmic and beat driven tracks which span a range of styles from pure experimental to ethnotronic.
His first release was a single track on the collaborative Music for Haiti charity CD put together by Hofa Media on the House Master Records label in Germany in February 2010. The debut allbum Strange Landscape followed in May 2010 on the Wasamix netlabel and collects together some of his earlier forays into the ambient scene including the popular Childs Play and Hokkaido tracks. Savaran is also part of the Ember Music netlabel roster of artists and will be releasing a collaborative album on that label later in the 2010. The latest EP release Microcosmos on the Gradient Audio label presents his most recent work. The four tracks demonstrate a move toward more complex layered and evolving soundscapes which can be bold and cinematic like Solar or minimalist and minutely observed like the title track Microcosmos.

Section 8

(US)

-Mike Waterbury, aka Section 8, fell in love with Drum & Bass in early 1999 after moving down to Atlanta from his hometown in Connecticut. Influenced by many sounds including Virus, Subtitles, Hospital, & Atlanta-based Shadow Law, his love for Liquid & Neurofunk was crystal clear in every set. After playing at numerous Drum & Bass events throughout the southeast, he soon became one of Atlanta’s top locals. In one such instance he even had to fill in for a certain LTJ BUKEM, who had missed a show due to complications. Section 8 was lauded for his ability to fill in for such a legend and still be able to hold the crowd with a ridiculously spectacular set. Some say he even rivaled LTJ himself. In 2005, Section 8 took the next step & started producing Drum & Bass. Two years later, he discovered a huge attraction to Dubstep after hearing such artists as Vaccine, Vex’d, and Burial. Now primarily focused on Dubstep, he is trying to bring something new to the table with his sound. Known for his signature synths and driving basslines, Section 8 is making his name known world wide. In September of 2009, Section 8’s debut release entitled “Mercury EP” was released on Abducted Records. Only out a few days, “Boulevard” appeared in Beatport’s Top 100 for Dubstep. The rest of Autumn and into the Winter of 2009 will be a busy season for Section 8, especially after his linking up with with top producers like Killeralien, B1tcrunch3r, Phonetic System, and Mouch. With an upcoming collaboration coming out on Planet Terror, and an EP due out before winter on Gamma Audio, the near future looks very very bright for Section 8.

Shureshotz

(GER)

-SHURESHOTZ ( born Jochen Schibetz 1975 ) is a german ambient and dubstep producer who started off making electronic music at the age of 17. Being educated in playing the guitar and piano he soon took advantage of modern music programming and sampling and found his love for detail in sound. Coming from a psychedelic rock orientated background he started to work for several music stores, soaking up everything concerning Audio Processing, Synth Programming, Mixing and Mastering.
After years of programming a lot of beats in genres like Trip Hop, Ambient, Rock, Goth and Drum n Bass he decided to make everything as mobile as possible and switched to a very tiny studio setup, completely based on software, a pair of headphones and a macbook pro, now being able to perform at any place anytime …By that time the project SHURESHOTZ was born. Spending a lot of time with sampling all the way through he collected a huge pack of sampled atmos, Sounds and drums which still are used on nearly every SHURESHOTZ production.
His main musical influence is hidden somewhere between Soul, RnB, Rock, Scores and Ambient Electronic Music. Always focussing on moving atmos, deep and melancholic Moods and sharp cutting Beats. After listening to a lot of DnB and Liquid in the late 90s and early 2000 the logical progression was to sneak deeper into the dubstep scene which immediately opened a new world in sound as well as space. The first SHURESHOTZ dubstep release dropped in 2009 and was followed by several digital releases including 2 EPs and some Compilation Releases in 2009 and 2010.
Shureshotz is hitting the lighter tones of the genre with a big focus on ambience. mood and melody but still remaining that dark energy of blasting drums and deep basslines.

Sublo

(US)

-After playing bass for nearly a decade, Jerel Bromley aka Sublo began producing and mixing in 2005, influenced by the dub culture from London and Jamaica which has brought bass music to the global club scene. Sublo has spent countless hours crafting a unique and heavy sound which chooses to emulate little and resonate large, with various influences ranging from G-funk to Grime. With a debut release on Shift recordings in 2009, and a solid solo EP on the streets in 2010, Sublo is taking his sound to the masses in an attempt to drown out all sound that does not go low. Releases for 2010 include tracks on future all star labels including Hot N Heavy, Gradient Audio, and Phantom Hz. With a hectic DJ schedule and tons of projects in the works, Sublo is definitely a name you will be seeing more in the future.

Surpass

(US)

-Surpass got an early start in the music world by playing trumpet at age 11. By age 16 he had taught himself to play most brass instruments, along with the guitar and bass. After graduating from the Denver School of the Arts (DSA), in 2000, he began dj’ing drum and bass. After many years, including a break from the dj/drum and bass scene, he found dubstep, and in late 2008 began making tunes of his own. Shortly after, in early 2009 he launched Alterkation Recordings with label mate Eli D, in an effort to expose up and coming artists like himself others. Since then, he has been signed on with stateside heavyweight Shift Recordings, along with several other notable stateside labels. Watch out in 2010, as it is set to be a big year for Alterkation and the man they call Surpass.

X-Zero

(UK)

-X-Zero started experimenting with making music around 1999 with Music 2000 on the PlayStation. It was from these early experiments that he knew what he wanted to do. Soon after, he got a PC and Fruity Loops, and didn’t look back. He started off creating many styles, but his first love, Drum and Bass, reared its ugly head. For 5 years he locked himself away to hone his craft. He is now at the point in his production where he is happy with what he can produce and wants to inflict his sound on as many ears as he can. He likes productions where all the elements compliment each other. He likes to infuse atmosphere and dark, sci-fi vibes to his productions. Techy leads, modulated bass lines and funky rolling drums add to the recipe, although on some tracks, he goes for a more soulful, clean sound. Music to him is about emotion, soul and atmosphere. He likes music that takes you on a journey, music that conjures images in your mind when you listen, music with energy, funk and groove, music that makes you want to move your body in mysterious ways!

Ylem

(AUS)

-YLEM is a producer and DJ who creates as part of the music/art collective The Community, which has contributed to underground culture in Perth by providing a platform for local talent. YLEM’s experimental production reflects his taste for the emerging future beat sub-genres. The eclectic array of hypnotic beats he produces span dubstep/future/psyche/trip-hip-hop creating new auditory spaces.
Noticing a lack of opportunities for local Dubstep DJs and producers, YLEM created WattHz in 2008, becoming the promoter of the first dedicated monthly night in Perth. This new direction for YLEM followed time spent playing in bands, producing hip hop beats for local MC’s and listening to DnB, elements of which continue to flavour his music. YLEM has supported big names in Dubstep including Reso, Excision, Plastician, Joker, Pinch and Kryptic Minds.
YLEMs’ sound is a continuously evolving musical expression with its depths in that primordial substance from which matter was formed. You can catch him presenting Bass Check on RTRFM 92.1 on Tuesday nights.
